Studies on the Effects of Red Kwao Kreur (Butea superba Roxb.) on Reproductive Organs, Reproductive Behavior, Sperm Density and Penile Erection in Male Albino Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

Dried powder and ethanolic extract from roots of the Red Kwao Kreur (Butea superba Roxb.) were fed to the male rat orally at the dosage of 0.25, 0.5 and 5 mg./ml/day once daily for 21 and 42 consecutive days. After 21 days of treatment, the results showed that the body weight of the rats from the group given 0.25 mg./ml./day of powder and ethanolic extract of Red Kwao Kreur were significantly less than the control group whereas the body weight and the sperm density from the group receive 0.5 and 5 mg./ml./day of powder were significantly increase more than the control group. Moreover, the ethanolic extract of 5 mg./ml./day also significantly increase the relative weight of seminal vesicle, prostate gland, and also the length of penis while erection. After 42 days of the treatment, the relative weight of seminal vesicle and the length of penis decreased. Furthermore, the two groups of rats showed the significant increase of libido, sperm density and the size of penis while erection. These results were concluded that dried powder and ethanolic extract from the root of Red Kwao Kreur could· pronounced the effects on some reproductive organs weight, and could increase the sperm density, libido and penile size while erection in the male albino rats.
